York Art Gallery

Went to see the William Morris exhibition and it didn't disappoint! Beautiful iconic wallpapers interspersed with other beautiful designs and decorative printing plates.

The gallery is made up of one interesting exhibition, a small but still nice permanent collection and a large ceramic exhibition. The volunteer inside the Anthony Shaw Collection was really helpful and friendly, I had a lovely time chatting with her.

Really disappointed to see they charge for access to the gallery now. Their charitable aims cite inclusion and community involvement in art, but charging £8+ per person obviously excludes anyone below a certain economic standing. I get these facilities cost money to run, but I’m sure charging for special exhibits but leaving most of the gallery free to access would still generate revenue alongside the cafe. Galleries in Leeds and Hull remain free so why charge in York. If donations do go towards helping disadvantaged communities access arts, then I’d like to hear more, but I won’t be returning. It doesn’t really feel like a charity to me, more like a private entertainment business that also gets the benefit of being able to apply for lots of grants.

I would put 0 if I could. It is terribly expensive for what they are displaying, not worthy at all. I wish I could have gotten a refund.

Visited over the weekend for the William Morris exhibition which was very informative, unfortunately but understandably weren't allowed to take photos of that. The permanent fixtures upstairs were nice to have a look around too. We received a friendly welcome upon entry and there were some lovely items for sale in the shop. The only downside was the cafe was closed, I'm not sure why but we were planning to visit after having the cake highly recommended! Lovely decor and everywhere very clean. Will definitely keep an eye on any future exhibitions here :)

Lovely building, uninspiring inside. Was eager to see William Morris Wallpaper exhibition, but boring presentation. Poor value for entrance fee. Staff friendly and pleasant and a pretty little shop.

Popped in yesterday to see the ceramics collection. Didn’t research before I went and was told they were moving some pieces but there was still plenty to see. The staff were friendly and prices were fair, even with donation. I paid less than £10 for full access to all of the current exhibitions. Worth every penny to see the calibre of work on display. Pieces by Magdalene Odundo and Carol McNicoll in their “Wall of Women” were a firm favourite. Highly recommend!

We went specifically for the William Morris wallpaper exhibition, which was brilliantly presented and so informative. Didn't have time to see the rest of the galleries. Helpful and friendly staff.

Visited for the William Morris exhibition. Superb and put his work in context with others well. Permanent exhibition good too, especially the pottery.

It is said that a fool never learns from his mistakes. Having just been “mugged” by the Yorkshire Museum, I walked a few hundred yards and got “mugged” again by the York Art Gallery. This lot were asking an admission charge of £8.50. I paid it and went in. To my untrained eye, the exhibits on display seemed to be part of the Gallery’s “Garbage, old and new” collection. I soon got around and exited. For that price, they could have provided a cup of tea and a biscuit but hospitality is not part of their stock in trade. “In 2023, tourism generated an economic impact of £1.82 billion to York's visitor economy.“ GOOGLE GEMMINI. York’s general greed and fakery is an embarrassment to England; it’s like a giant gift-shoppe which sells low-quality but expensive bric-a-bat.

Lovely display space. Just the right size to get around without getting weary. Delighted to see so many female artists being exhibited, as well as some Grayson Perry ceramics and a Lowry.
